Prazosin hydrochloride, USP a quinazoline derivative, is the first of a new chemical class of antihypertensives. Prazonic-XL belongs to a class of medications called alpha blockers. It works by relaxing and widening blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Prazonic-XL is used with or without other medications to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems
Prazosin hcl 2.5/5mg tablet
MODE OF ACTION:
Prazonic-XL is an α1-blocker that acts as an inverse agonist at alpha-1 adrenergic
Receptor. Blocking α-receptors on vascular smooth muscle allow muscle relaxation, dilation of vessel and reduced resistance.
Prazonic-XL inhibits the postsynaptic alpha-1 adrenoceptors. This inhibition blocks the vasoconstricting (narrowing) effect of catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine) on the vessels, leading to peripheral blood vessel dilation. Through blood vessel constriction by adrenergic receptor activation, epinephrine and norepinephrine normally act to increase blood pressure
Initial dose: 1 mg orally 2 or 3 times a day
Maintenance dose: 1 to 20 mg orally per day in divided doses
