Sucroferric Oxyhydroxide (Equivalent to Elemental Iron)

Fosdown is an advanced, iron-based, calcium-free phosphate binder formulated for the control of serum phosphorus in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing dialysis. Its unique mechanism of action allows it to effectively reduce dietary phosphate absorption by binding phosphate in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, forming insoluble complexes that are excreted in the feces. By lowering the phosphate load, Fosdown helps manage hyperphosphatemia, a common and serious complication in CKD, thus reducing the risk of vascular calcification, cardiovascular events, and bone mineral disorders.

Unlike calcium-containing binders, Fosdown avoids the risk of hypercalcemia, making it a safer long-term option. Clinical evidence shows Sucroferric Oxyhydroxide provides potent phosphate control, and achieves target phosphorus levels with a significantly lower pill burden. The reduced number of tablets improves patient adherence and treatment satisfaction, and Fosdown demonstrates superior gastrointestinal tolerability, with fewer overall GI side effects.

Therapy Area: Renal Medicine
Form: Chewable Tablet
Packaging: 1 x 6 Tab

COMPOSITION:

Sucroferric Oxyhydroxide 2500 mg (equivalent to Elemental Iron 500 mg)

MODE OF ACTION:

Fosdown (Sucroferric Oxyhydroxide) works as a phosphate binder by acting locally in the gastrointestinal tract to reduce phosphate absorption. Its active component, polynuclear iron(III)-oxyhydroxide, binds dietary phosphate ions through ligand exchange with hydroxyl groups across the physiological pH range of the gut. This binding forms insoluble iron-phosphate complexes that cannot be absorbed, effectively trapping phosphate in the gut.

These complexes pass through the gastrointestinal tract and are excreted unchanged in the feces, thereby lowering serum phosphate levels without systemic absorption or iron overload. In addition, the sucrose and starch components of Fosdown are digested and absorbed as simple sugars; however, these do not participate in phosphate binding.

INDICATIONS

  • Hyperphosphatemia
