Flucloxacillin

Drug class: Narrow-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic of the penicillin class Flucloxacillin is used to treat a wide variety of infections like Skin and soft tissue infection, Endocarditis, Pneumonia, Osteomyelitis, chest and wound infections.

It diffuses well into most tissues & organs. Effective against infections caused by methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA).

Resistant to penicillinase enzyme. Flucloxacillin should be added if staphylococcal pneumonia is suspected.

COMPOSITION:

Flucloxacillin sodium 1 gm injection

MODE OF ACTION:

Flucloxacillin acts by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. By binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, flucloxacillin inhibits the bacterial cell wall synthesis.
It inhibits cross-linkage between the linear peptidoglycan polymer chains that make up a major component of the cell wall

INDICATIONS

  • Skin and soft tissue infections: - Abscesses, cellulitis
  • Respiratory tract infections: - Lower respiratory tract infections: lung abscess, pneumonia
  • Bone and joint infections: - Arthritis, osteomyelitis
  • Endocarditis

Dosage

Adult dose: Usual adult dose 2g every 6 hours
Children: 200 mg/kg/day in equal divided doses 4-6 hours
