Tobramycin

Tobramycin is a potent aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from Streptomyces tenebrarius, specifically designed to combat a broad spectrum of bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is most commonly used in treating lung infections associated with cystic fibrosis (CF) patients.

Tobramycin is delivered through a targeted inhalation system (TIS) that delivers the antibiotic directly to the lungs. This method is highly beneficial in reducing the risk of pulmonary exacerbations and hospitalizations, especially in patients aged 6 years and older with cystic fibrosis. Additionally, the use of TIS helps to decrease sputum density of P. aeruginosa in the lungs, improving respiratory function and reducing infection rates

Therapy Area: Antibiotics
Form: Inhalation solution
Packaging: 1x5 Ampoule

COMPOSITION:

Tobramycin Inhalation Solution 300mg/5ml

MODE OF ACTION:

Tobramycin works by targeting the bacterial ribosome, specifically binding to the 30S subunit. This binding inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria, causing errors in the transcription of genetic material and ultimately halting bacterial growth. This results in the bactericidal effect of tobramycin, which not only kills the bacteria but also exhibits both immediate and delayed killing action.

Since tobramycin does not pass through the gastrointestinal tract, it must be administered either inhalation or via intravenously to directly reach the lungs, where it can effectively target Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative organisms. By delivering the antibiotic directly to the site of infection, tobramycin reduces the reliance on systemic antibiotics, improving safety and reducing potential side effects.
